- Damn the final line of this chapter really makes you curious about what happened in 1988. “the year her best friend was possessed by the devil.”

- Oh my God. No one showing up to Abby’s party is so sad.

- Abby and Gretchen skating together is so cute!
That’s What Friends Are For
- The witness protection program thing is hilarious and I already love Gretchen.
- But it’s so sad that she felt she had to lie about it
- “if anyone saw a black person walking down the street […] they would pull their volvo over and ask if he was lost”. Well. That’s fucked up. Basically saying black people can’t live in the Old Village. It’s just for white people.
- If I didn’t know any better I’d think this was written by a woman. Grady Hendrix is really great at writing girls and women (I thought the same about southern book club guide).
- I think the thing is that you don’t know if the possession thing is real or not, but I think this is the first (well, first blatant) hint that Gretchen is going through some pretty heavy things, with her mom hitting her, and then telling Abby she wants to kill her.
Party All the Time
- “he was famous for slipping drugs into girls’ drinks […] after they passed out, he’d have sex with them”. What the fuck. So he’s raping then. AND THE JUDGE ENCOURAGED ONE OF THE GIRL’S PARENTS NOT TO PRESS CHARGES BC HES FROM A RICH FAMILY AND HAD HIS FUTURE AHEAD OF HIM. WHAT ABOUT *HER* FUTURE?

- God if I didn’t know satanic panic was a thing in the 80s id be like “no way is that a real story” about mickey mouse and LSD. (I mean, I know it’s not real, but I know people come up with stuff like that.)

- Something really awful must’ve happened to Gretchen. Like idk. I have a bad feeling. Her having lost some of her things, being unable to remember what happened.
- I know for the rest of the girls the acid didn’t work, but what if it did for Gretchen? Like, I know some date rape drugs have the side-effect of being unable to remember what happened, and Margaret’s brother Riley and what he did *was* brought up
- It’s so cute there’s a picture of the mickey mouse phone in the book

If I didn’t know any better I’d think this was written by a woman. Grady Hendrix is really great at writing girls and women right? would never know this was a man like, the detail on Abby's make-up and the lists of lists of lists in gel pens... he knows what he's talking about!!
God if I didn’t know satanic panic was a thing in the 80s id be like “no way is that a real story” about mickey mouse and LSD. rn there are news stories in my area warning people that their kids are going to get weed gummies in their halloween candy, so they should be really careful and check all the packaging bc definitely someone is going to spend thousands of dollars to get little kids high. people are so weird about halloween like that one guy killed his own son in like, the 70s(??) so now people have their candy xrayed at police stations and spend hours and hours making sure nothing has been tampered with. We would always end about an hour before we needed to so my dad and I could spread everything out and toss the stuff he thought might have been fucked with which is like Insane in retrospect like! statistically, he was more likely to murder me than a poisoned snickers bar; people are crazy. Sorry, I think I had more to say about this than I thought I did. This wasn't even about halloween my bad.

The creepy building in the middle of the woods with darker than dark spots through the windows... Abby's name being called in a perfectly normal voice... that's some spooky ass shit and I cannot WAIT for more of that!!
